Ellerby’s hat trick leads Rochester Americans to victory

Defenseman Keaton Ellerby scored three goals and left winger Shawn Matthias scored one and set up two as the Rochester Americans defeated the Syracuse Crunch 5-2 tonight.

The Amerks improved to 14-2-1 by defeating Syracuse for the fifth time in five meetings. Rochester is idle until Tuesday’s game at Hamilton. They are home next Friday against Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Matthias scored at 17:37 of the first period to break a 1-1 tie, and Andrew Sweetland’s highlight DVD goal at 8:38 of the second extended the lead to 3-1.

Ellerby scored 32 seconds into the third period for a 4-1 lead before Trevor Frischmon’s short-handed goal at 2:11 pulled Syracuse back within two.

Newcomer Steve MacIntyre won a third period fight with Crunch tough-guy winger Jon Mirasty.
