Syracuse names Paulus starting quarterback
After just one week of practice, Syracuse football coach Doug Marrone has named Greg Paulus to be the starting quarterback for the Orange. The move was announced in a statement released by the university tonight.
Paulus, who starred in football and basketball at Christian Brothers Academy in suburban Syracuse, is a graduate student who enrolled at SU after spending the last four years playing point guard for the Duke University basketball team. He scored 1,193 points in 139 games for the Blue Devils.
Paulus compiled a 42-3 record as a high school quarterback and led CBA to the state Class AA championship and was named the Gatorade National Player of the Year as a senior.
He holds the state records for passing yards in a season (3,677) and a career (11,760) and also owns the mark for touchdown passes in a season (45) and career (152).
Paulus beat out redshirt freshman Ryan Nassib, who was named the starter during spring practice, senior Cam Dantley and freshman Charley Loeb.
Syracuse, which went 3-9 last season, opens this season against Minnesota on Sept. 5 at the Carrier Dome.
