Syracuse University’s Mike Williams, one of the top receivers in the country, quit the team today.

SU coach Doug Marrone said Williams informed him of his decision this morning.

The senior from Buffalo ranks sixth nationally with 106.6 receiving yards per game and is 14th with seven receptions per game. Both numbers top all Big East Conference receivers.

Williams had 49 catches for 746 yards and six touchdowns this season.

Mike Williams came in to me today and has quit the program,” Marrone said at his weekly meeting with reporters. “Again, I do not comment on people that have left the program, but he has quit the program.”

Marrone said Williams requested the morning meeting and added that he had “no idea” why the receiver quit.

Williams is one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletknikoff Award, given annually to the top receiver in the nation.

The senior did not play last year because of academic problems and was suspended for the SU-Akron game nine days ago for violating team policy.
