SYRACUSE — Syracuse University scored 24 points in the first half and Churchville-Chili graduate Averin Collier raced 60 yards for a late touchdown as the Orange stunned No. 25 Rutgers 31-13 today at the Carrier Dome.

SU (4-7, 1-5 Big East) had not beaten a ranked team since outlasting No. 18 Louisville on the road two years ago.

Antwon Bailey scored on a 14-yard run on SU’s first possession, Delone Carter ran in from the five and sophomore tight end Carl Cutler caught a 1-yard TD pass from Greg Paulus as the Orange built a 21-2 lead midway through the second quarter.

Rutgers recorded a safety when Joe Lefeged blocked a Rob Punt punt out of the SU end zone.

The Knights made it 21-10 on a 38-yard halfback option from Mohamed Sanu to Tim Brown and a 2-point conversion pass, and SU freshman Ryan Lichtenstein made it 24-10 with a 44-yard field goal with 3:11 left in the half.

SU outgained Rutgers 259-82 in total yards in the first half and 424-130 for the game.

The Orange registered nine sacks and held the ball for 40:01.

There was no scoring in the third quarter. Rutgers’ CQSan San Te kicked a 25-yard field goal with 11:41 left in the game.

SU’s Mike Holmes intercepted a pass with 5:45 remaining, and Collier scored on a 60-yard run up the middle to put the game out of reach.

Collier rushed for 66 yards on six attempts.
