D.C. trip provided new perspective on health care reform debate

During the first week of October, I had the opportunity to travel to Washington, D.C., to discuss health care reform with members of our government and interest groups working on the topic.
After studying health care reform this summer, it made a world of difference to get clarification on certain reforms like the co-op option that Democratic Sen. Kent Conrad of North Dakota, a member of the “Gang of Six,” supports. While my group talked with him about health care reform, I realized how those living in rural areas have influenced him.
After getting a Democratic perspective, we wanted to keep a balance by also hearing from the right wing.
At the other end of the political spectrum, my group met with Republican Sen. Mike Enzi of Wyoming. He is a strong proponent of a bipartisan effort. It was interesting to view his ideas about employer-sponsored wellness programs.
As students that live within New York’s 28th District, we set up a meeting with Democratic Rep. Louise Slaughter of Fairport. Her legislative director informed us that she supported the public option, but didn’t believe the co-op system was the way to go because we have already tried something similar to this.
It was interesting to see someone from our area making a difference in our government. This trip revealed the complexities of health care reform.
Seeing the difference in opinion even on the same side of the political spectrum showed the difficulties that go into creating a successful plan. This trip was an experience I will never forget.
