WEBSTER — Honeoye Falls-Lima freshman Cari Stankaitis pushed herself off to a strong start on Friday during the New York State Federation Girls Swimming and Diving Championships.

Stankaitis produced the fastest time in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries at the Webster Aquatic Center, when she finished her heat in 24.23 seconds, 12/100ths faster than Amherst eighth-grader Aleza Epstein (24.35).

The top 10 finishers in each race will swim in the final or Federation championship heats on Saturday.

Fairport sophomore Rachel Brekovsky, junior Melanie Baron, sophomore Gwen Hoffman and junior Michelle Dufault were the eighth-fastest 200 medley relay after they completed their race today in 1:51.38.

Livonia sophomore Kaitlin Sessler became Section V’s sixth qualifier when she placed 10th in the 100-yard freestyle, which she swam in 54.13 seconds.

Sara Giberson, a senior at Tottenville of the Public School Athletic League, swam the fastest time of the preliminaries in back-to-back races — the 200 freestyle (1:50.65) and 200 individual medley (2:05.27). Both of those were automatic All-American times.

Victor junior Ashley Broderick is second behind Binghamton’s Alyssa Menz in the diving competition after eight of 11 dives. Broderick was the top seed.
