WEBSTER — Victor junior Ashley Broderick and Honeoye Falls-Lima freshman Cari Stankaitis will finish this season as state champions.

Broderick rallied to earn a score of 475.80 and become the Federation girls state diving champion at the Webster Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. The Upstate New York Diving Club member was in sixth place through five of the 11 dives, but was in second by the end of the preliminaries.

Binghamton’s Alyssa Menz was the runner-up with a score of 451.95.

Stankaitis raced this morning to the Federation 50-yard freestyle girls state swimming title, her first since she joined the school’s varsity last season,

Stankaitis swam the fastest time (24.23 seconds) during the preliminaries Friday, then finished the final in 24.09 seconds. Runner-up Aleza Epstein, an eighth-grader at Amherst, finished in 24.23.

It’s really amazing,” Stankaitis said. “I never expected to be a state champion, especially as a freshman. I can’t even describe this.”

Fairport’s 200 medley relay of sophomore Rachel Brekovsky, junior Melanie Barion, sophomore Gwen Hoffman and junior Michelle Dufault placed seventh in their event.

Relays from Victor and Penfield were 12th and 18th, respectively.
