Vogel’s goal lifts Aquinas to win over Irondequoit

Jake Vogel broke a tie with three minutes remaining as Aquinas defeated Irondequoit 2-1 in the Skate For Cure showcase Saturday at RIT.

The five games played Saturday at RIT will benefit the Skate For Cure charity, which raises money for breast cancer research.

C.J. Vonbargen scored Aquinas’ first goal in the first period.

Dave York tied the game with 7:30 left for Irondequoit (0-1).

Vogel scored unassisted less than five minutes later.

Pete Dohr made 20 saves for Aquinas (1-0).

Fairport 6, Webster Schroeder 1

Junior forward Tim Elie scored twice to lead the Red Raiders (1-0) and sophomore forward Connor Boyd and junior forward Steve Danylyshyn each scored their first varsity goals.

Ian Jacques scored for Schroeder (0-1).

Sophomore Mark McEvily made 21 saves for his first varsity win.

Spencerport 2, Brighton/ER/HF-L 1

Freshman centerman Matt Corey scored the winner in the second period to lift Spencerport (1-0).

Scott Doud assisted on the winner and scored the first goal for the Rangers.

Pat McLaughlin scored Brighton/ER/HF-L’s goal.

Penfield 1, Pittsford 1

Matt McCarty scored 58 seconds into the second period to give the Panthers (0-0-1) a 1-0 lead.

Justin Rehm tied the game at 8:24 of the second period for the Patriots (0-0-1).

Senior Ryan Haen made 16 saves for Pittsford and senior Michael Catanzaro made 25 saves for Penfield.

Webster Thomas 4, Churchville Chili 1

Marc Vaccarelli scored a goal and had an assist and Misha Dombovy-Johnson and Zack Lamb each had two assists for the Titans.

Matthew Casilio, Michael Iulianello and R.J. Sciarrone also scored for Webster Thomas (1-0).

Dylan Niewiemski made 37 saves for the Saints (0-1).

Section V League

Gates Chili 4, Victor 1

Junior forward John Mosca scored twice for the Spartans (1-0) and junior forward Brandon Morgan and senior forward Ryan Fitzgerald also scored at Genesee Valley. Matt Portland scored for the Blue Devils (0-1).

Greece Arcadia/Olympia 3, Rush-Henrietta 3

Ron Raimond scored the tying goal with nine seconds remaining for Greece (0-0-1) at Scottsville Ice Arena.

Sean Tomkinson and Tyler Szczesniak each scored their first career goals for R-H (0-0-1).

Rob Cammilleri and Shayne McGowan also scored for Greece.

Championship

Geneva/Waterloo 4, Geneseo/Livonia 3

MVP Zach Koczent made 32 saves, and Derek Grillone scored the winner 6:49 into the third period for Geneva/Waterloo (2-0).

Max Hartnett, Derek Bishopp and Timmy Tremblay scored for Geneseo (1-2).

300 for Vyverberg

McQuaid coach Al Vyverberg recorded his 300th career win as the Knights defeated Auburn of Section III 8-2 Saturday at Genesee Valley.
“It flew by,” said Vyverberg of his 23 seasons. “I still enjoy it because every year I get to coach a new group of kids. It’s why I keep doing it.”
He is three wins shy of tying Irondequoit’s Al Mertz for the all-time Section V record.
Nick Petrella scored four goals with one assist and Matt Kick added two goals and two assists for McQuaid (1-0).
