The ball bounced today into Strong National Museum of Play’s Toy Hall of Fame.

The museum also chose the Big Wheel and the Nintendo Game Boy from the 12 finalists.

In praising the ball, the museum said that a ball is central to older children’s play from kickball to tennis and baseball. “Today, we even set aside physical spaces — baseball stadiums, tennis courts, and golf courses to play these ball games,” the museum says in its announcement.

The Big Wheel was launched at the 1969 New York City Toy Fair and remained one of the top sellers for a decade.

The Game Boy, the museum said, was an innovator and changed the way people play electronic games. It popularized the handheld, mobile game devices.

The museum will celebrate this year’s class with special activities all weekend long.
