Military colleges forum

An educational forum on military colleges will be held at 7 tonight at Spencerport High School, E.J. Wilson Building, 2707 Spencerport Road. The event is hosted by Rep. Chris Lee, R-Clarence, and will be attended by representatives from military academies.

Preservationist to speak Friday

Environmentalist, humanitarian and author Julia Butterfly Hill will speak at the Harley School, 1981 Clover St., at 7 p.m. Friday. Hill is best known for sitting in a redwood tree for two years to protest the clear-cutting efforts of a lumber company.

No tickets are required, but a $10 donation is suggested.

Music series begins tonight

Dawn Thomson will host a new weekly series of live shows each Thursday at Max of Eastman Place, 25 Gibbs St. A different set of guests accompanies the singer/songwriter and guitarist each week, starting tonight with bassist Jeff Campbell and tenor saxophonist John Nugent. In Thomson’s household, Nugent is also known as her husband; in larger circles, he’s also known as the co-producer and artistic director of the Rochester International Jazz Festival.

The free shows, set up in the bar area of the restaurant, run from 7 to 10 p.m. Next Thursday’s show features Thomson with Nugent and guitarist Kinloch Nelson. Call (585) 346-0850.

Brockport bridge work begins

Rehabilitation work on the Smith Street bridge in Brockport begins this week. The $1.5 million project includes restoring structural deficiencies and enhancing mobility for local residents, said state Department of Transportation spokeswoman Debbie Sullivan. The bridge will remain closed to motorists until work is completed in late 2010. Pedestrian access is expected by next summer.
