Laura Bush to speak at Lakeside Gala Dinner
Former first lady Laura Bush will be the guest speaker at the Lakeside Foundation’s Annual Gala Dinner Dec. 11 at the Rochester Riverside Convention Center.
This is the 21st year of the dinner, which benefits Lakeside Health System, a 181-bed facility in Brockport. Previous speakers include former President George Bush, Mary Matalin, James Carville, former first lady Barbara Bush, Walter Cronkite, Colin Powell and Dr. Benjamin Carson.
Laura Bush was chosen mainly because she is a leading advocate for women’s health issues. She promotes women’s heart health as the Founding Ambassador for the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute’s The Heart truth campaign and supports breast cancer awareness and research as Global Ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“It is always good to highlight a woman of her stature,” Lakeside Foundation Vice President Susan Parrino said. “Her interests on literacy and health issues in general made her appealing to us.”
Bush, who just started going on the speaking tour last spring, also asked for a question and answer session with the audience after her speech. “I can’t wait to hear her ideas about what it is like to be first lady,” Parrino said.
