Steuben town to allow wind turbines to proceed

The Prattsburgh Town Board in Steuben County has voted to settle a controversial lawsuit by a wind-power developer.

The board voted 3-2 on Friday to approve the settlement, which would give Ecogen Wind LLC the right to proceed without interference from the town. The company wants to build 16 415-foot-tall turbines in Prattsburgh and 17 more in Italy, Yates County.

Voters ousted two pro-wind members of the board in November, and the company sued to prevent new board members who take office Jan. 1 from blocking the project. It filed a similar legal action against the Italy board.

State Supreme Court Justice Stephen Lindley, who is hearing both cases, has said he intends to consider arguments on the proposed Prattsburgh settlement in the coming days.
