In the past month, Wegmans has collected more than $1 million for earthquake relief efforts in Haiti, company officials announced today.

The grocery store chain collected $1,012,321 in donations from customers and employees at all 75 stores. All of the collected money is being directed to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, for disaster relief efforts in Haiti, in the wake of the deadly Jan. 12 quake.

The outpouring of support we saw from customers and employees, in such a short period of time, was unprecedented,” said Linda Lovejoy, Wegmans’ community relations manager. “Our hearts have been touched by the images we’ve seen on the news or in social media, and everyone wants to help.”

Through the program, customers were able to donate any amount toward the cause at checkout counters in Wegmans stores.

The program was originally planned to last 10 days, but company officials extended it for two more weeks, through Sunday, after customers asked for more time to give.
