New Greece Police Chief Todd Baxter took his oath of office during a ceremony at noon today at the Greece Community and Senior Center on Vince Tofany Boulevard.

Previously a captain with the Rochester Police Department, Baxter was picked last month from a pool of 11 candidates vying to replace former Chief Merritt Rahn, who resigned in October.

Brian Uhrmacher was named acting deputy chief before the ceremony. Uhrmacher had been acting chief since Rahn was suspended in April.

Baxter, 44, served 22 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves and joined the Rochester Police Department in 1987. He is an adjunct professor of health and physical education at Monroe Community College and an instructor with the Public Safety Training Center in Rochester. Was also commanding officer of the city’s SWAT-like Emergency Tactical Force. He lives in Ogden with his wife and two sons.

Baxter takes command of the Greece Police Department following more than a year of scandal there. Two former officers are serving prison terms for drug and sex crimes, and others still face criminal charges or have been demoted for alleged wrongdoing uncovered during an internal investigation. Rahn is scheduled to go on trial March 29 on criminal charges he falsified paperwork and committed other wrongdoing.
