Man accused of sexually abusing girl in Irondequoit temple

A Rochester man has been accused of sexually abusing a young girl while in a Jewish temple in Irondequoit.
Orlando Colon, 25, was charged Saturday with first-degree sexual abuse, a felony, said Sgt. Barry VanNostrand of the Irondequoit Police Department. Colon is accused of entering Temple Beth David, 3200 St. Paul Blvd., around noon on Saturday. While inside, he allegedly headed to the temple’s basement and into a classroom.
Colon is accused of exposing himself to several children in the classroom. He’s also accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl, VanNostrand said.
According to police, Colon was not a member of the temple and had not been inside the temple before.
After the girl left the classroom, she went upstairs and alerted her parents, who called police, VanNostrand said. Officers located Colon inside the temple Saturday and took him into custody without incident.
“It’s understandable that parents would believe their children are safe in a temple, but this shows that, not matter where you are, you can’t let your guard down,” VanNostrand said.
Colon was arraigned Saturday in Irondequoit Town Court and was remanded to the Monroe County Jail without bail.
VanNostrand said the case will be presented to a Monroe County Grand Jury. Additional charges may be forthcoming, he said.
