My Side of the Mountain by Jean Craighead George

Reviewed by Mitchell Pelissier, a fifth-grader at Iroquois Middle School in Irondequoit.

This book is amazing! Sam Gribley runs away from his crowded home in New York City to the Catskill Mountains. He brings only forty dollars, a knife and flint to start a fire. Sam has to learn how to survive on his own.

His first shelter is a carved out of a tree. Sam has trouble finding his grandfather’s old farm and has to ask the town librarian for help. Sam catches a falcon that he names Frightful. He also makes friends with a raccoon, a weasel and other animals.

I enjoyed this book because it has lots of adventure and dangerous risks. It also shows how you can survive outdoors for a long time.
